fire, killing a man who they say was pointing a knife at him. mike schuh is live with more on what happened. good morning, mike. >> reporter: good morning. county police say that their officer stopped a man behind this gas station and what happened next is up for investigation. >> the officer on routine patrol passes this shell station around 3:45 in the morning. behind the building a suspicious man. police say when the officer asked the man to come out he pulled a knife. >> the officer did attempt to use a tauzer -- a taser but it was ineffective. the man continued at the officer still has the knife and refused repeated commands to drop the knife. >> fearing for his safety the officer shot the man in the chest. 36-year-old gregory stegall dies at the scene. >> you have to be crazy to go towards a cop with something. >> robert mills moved his family out of the city to avoid crime. now he realizes no place is immune so violence. >> life goes on, you have to come out and do what you have to do. you do what you can to stay safe. >> reporter: now some neighbors tell eyewitness news tha

"new york times" and mike schneider managing editor and anchor of new jersey today on public television. sarah, start with the areas you've been looking at. what major problems persist weeks after the storm? >> well, it depends where you look. in new jersey, some towns are still on lockdown. so they're really at a standstill. people have been able to maybe cart out dry wall, clean up the mold but they can't progress. they can't figure out if they want to raise up their houses or just build it the way it was. really prevented from moving forward at all. when you go to places like the rock-aways, while there's been tremendous clean-up, again these same issues. people don't know are they going to get insurance money to fix the way they need to? are they going to get extra subsidies in order to do these mitigating factors? so the problems that persist are how to rebuild and when. >> brown: mike snyder, how would you characterize it? is it really different in different areas? >> very much so. it depends on what part of the coast you're on, it depends on whether you're on the coast or inland
